I found this article about Music as cognition. It's very interesting because it discusses music in very broad terms which can be important to stress to students: Music is all around us.
I found this article really thought-provoking. I feel as though it would be especially beneficial for students around the high school age. Students often have such an ingrained idea of what music is, and this article could be a starting point for discussion and new ideas.
Also, I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but I like the "August Rush" reference at the end of your post. "Music is all around us. All you have to do is listen." :)
Love this resource Anna, Music is all around us, and what a great way to talk the importance of that. It isn't just for the classroom, but there are many aspects of music that are not necessarily traditional and can still be implemented in the classroom.
